What are the system requirements?+
MacWhisper operates entirely on your Mac. For optimal performance, especially when using Medium and Large models, a Mac with more than 8GB of RAM is recommended. While the app runs on Intel-based Macs, performance may vary. Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4) benefit from faster transcriptions due to GPU acceleration.
How does the App Store version differ?+
The version available on macwhisper.com offers full functionality, including features like system-wide dictation and automatic meeting recording. Due to App Store restrictions, these features are not available in the App Store version. Additionally, the direct version allows for more frequent updates and quicker access to new features.
Is my data private?+
All transcription processes occur locally on your device when using the default local models; no audio or text data is sent to external servers. MacWhisper may send anonymous analytics related to licensing status to ensure valid usage. For more details, consult the Privacy Policy.
Which features send data off my Mac?+
Transcription and speaker identification with the built-in Whisper or Parakeet models stay entirely on your device. The optional cloud features do send data: cloud transcription providers such as Groq, ElevenLabs and Deepgram receive your audio, DeepL receives transcriptions for translation, and AI prompts go to providers like OpenAI or Anthropic. Using a local AI provider such as Ollama or LM Studio keeps that on-device too.
Can I deploy MacWhisper with MDM?+
MacWhisper supports deployment via Mobile Device Management (MDM). By placing a license file at ~/Library/Application Support/MacWhisper/mdmlicense.plist, users are automatically validated upon launch. For detailed instructions, refer to the MDM Deployment Guide.
Can I use my license on multiple devices?+
A MacWhisper Pro license can be used on your personal devices. For multiple devices or team deployments, we offer discounted license packs. For bulk purchases or custom deployments, please reach out to support@macwhisper.com.
How many Macs can one license activate?+
The personal license has a soft limit of 3 devices. When you move to a new computer you can free up a slot from settings ▸ pro ▸ remove license. Licenses showing signs of abuse — such as unauthorised resale — can be disabled automatically; email support@macwhisper.com if yours was disabled in error.
I've lost my license key. Now what?+
If you've misplaced your license key, please contact support@macwhisper.com with the email address used during purchase. We'll assist you in retrieving your license information. It's also worth searching your inbox for the Gumroad purchase email, or checking your library at gumroad.com/library.
Is there a refund policy?+
If you're not satisfied with MacWhisper Pro, contact us within 7 days of purchase detailing your concerns, and we'll process a refund. We want every customer to be happy with their purchase and often times we can fix issues very quickly!
Is there a student discount?+
Students, journalists, and non-profit organizations are eligible for a 25% discount on MacWhisper Pro. To apply, email support@macwhisper.com with details about your work or organization.
Does it work on older versions of macOS?+
MacWhisper maintains legacy support for older macOS versions, including Monterey (2.22) and Ventura (10.9.2). This ensures broader accessibility for users with previous macOS installations. These versions can be accessed from your purchase page.
Is there an iOS and iPad version?+
MacWhisper is also available on iOS. This version is currently focused on transcribing files and voice memos which you can then save, summarise or prompt with AI. Download it from the App Store.
