Design Mac Apps

Most design happens inside one big app, but the work around it doesn't. Reference piles up, exports scatter across folders, and a surprising share of the day goes to finding a file you already made. The apps in this category cover that surrounding work on macOS.

Each one is here because it does a specific job well, not because it has the longest feature list. Open any app for its pricing, a full description, and a link straight to the developer's own site.

What to look for in a design app

  • File format support — check it handles what you actually ship, from Figma and Sketch exports to PSD, SVG and RAW, without a conversion step in between.
  • Offline search — an asset library is only useful if you can find things in it without waiting on a sync to finish.
  • Annotation speed — screenshot tools vary enormously in how fast you can arrow, blur and label something before sending it.
  • Licensing — one-time licences are still common in this category, so check before you commit to another subscription.
